Thomas Vander Veen, Director and Principal

Thomas Vander Veen, Director and Principal, specializes in the application of economics to intellectual property, international trade, and complex commercial disputes. His intellectual property expertise includes valuation; the evaluation of economic damages related to patent, copyright, and trademark infringement and theft of trade secrets; and economic analysis in section 337 intellectual property matters before the U.S. International Trade Commission. His intellectual property experience also includes the evaluation of commercial success of patented products, including in ANDA actions involving pharmaceutical products. In section 337 matters, his expertise includes economic analysis of domestic industry, substantial injury, commercial success, bonding, civil penalty and remedy factors. In addition to intellectual property matters, Dr. Vander Veen has evaluated economic damages in a wide range of matters, including breach of contract, antitrust, employment, and complex insurance disputes. Dr. Vander Veen has served as an economic expert in U.S. Courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Dr. Vander Veen served as the principal economic advisor to a Commissioner, and subsequently the Chairman, of the U.S. International Trade Commission. Previously, Dr. Vander Veen was an assistant professor of economics at Skidmore College. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from Brown University.
